The Gift of the Present Moment

Our world is a beautiful place, there is so much to discover and so much to experience.
We can only do this if we are living in the present moment. Worrying about the past is futile, a waste of energy as we can’t change it and feeling anxious about the future is also using up unnecessary energy as the future never materialises, we have all heard the saying, ‘Tomorrow never comes.’ Usually our worries and concerns rarely unfold as we imagine and we certainly have no direct control over most situations, we can only control ourselves, in fact we only can only control our reactions as our emotions naturally occur when we least expect them. Choosing to stay in the present moment means that we can appreciate what is happening all round us. Each flower, delicately emerging from a tight bud, the tiny insects which flutter their lacy wings, the bright sun rising each morning and the silvery moon glistening in the dark, starry sky. The sea lapping the golden sand, the trees gently swaying in the breeze or the calling of birds as they communicate with each other. All these amazing experiences we would miss if we allow our worry minds to take over and consume us.
Anxiety, worry, anger or sadness are all normal human emotions which everyone feels time after time at some point but we can learn to switch them off too, silencing the thoughts that spin round and around. Spending time with ourselves, sitting quietly, out in nature, exercising or doing something which occupies the mind like colouring, cooking, painting, sewing, building or creating will keep us focused and hence keep our racing brains from running away and spiralling. In this light meditative state we can simply BE. We can appreciate the HERE and NOW, the beauty and magic of LIFE.
Try this daily to stay in the present and connect with yourself:

Breathing Technique

Make sure you are sitting comfortably with your feet flat on the floor and your arms by your side. Close your eyes and take a big breath in through your nose, filling your lungs. Slowly breathe out of your mouth. Breathe in … and out. As you breathe in, know that you are breathing all the goodness from around you and as you breathe out, breathe out any worries or troubles. Feel yourself becoming calm and relaxed as you breathe in and out. Let any thoughts float away, they are not important right now. Just keep breathing in and out, calm and relaxed.
As you breathe in deeply feel all the lovely, calm air circle around your feet. Notice how they feel? Are they hot, warm cold? Let go and relax, feel them becoming floppy. Breathe and relax.
Breathe into you your legs, relax all your muscles and sense how they feel. Beautiful. Breathe and relax.
Think about your tummy, notice how soft it is. Breathe deeply into your tummy and feel the air flowing around. Relax, breathe out through the nose.
Focus on your hands. Open your hands, palms facing upwards and let the feeling of any tension go. Breathe and relax your hands.
Take your attention to your shoulders. Raise them up towards your ears and let them flop. Breathe and relax.
Feel all the tension in your body melting. Floating away. Your body feels heavy as it lies on the floor. Breathe and relax.
Take a deep breath in through your nose …. and slowly breath out through your mouth.
Spend some moments being still.

Wiggle your fingers and toes and when you are ready, open your eyes and simply observe all you can see, feel or hear around you and SMILE.
